Sydney Thunders Current Squad

Sydney Thunders is actually a popular Australian cricket team that takes part in the Australian twenty20 tournament, which is known as the Big Bash League. The team is recognized for its unique lime green uniforms. The home-ground of the Sydney Thunders was ANZ Stadium from the year 2011 to 2014. But from 2015 till now, all the home matches of Sydney Thunders are played at the Sydney Showground Stadium (Giants Stadium).

Sydney Thunders was founded 9 years ago in 2011. It was named after Sydney, the famous city of Australia. Thunders won the fifth season of the Big Bash League which is also known as the inaugural season of the WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League).

History:

The Sydney Thunders was founded in 2011. The NSW Cricket board decided that the team color will be lime green for Sydney Thunders because other’s colors were rejected as they were too close to the team colors of other Sports teams. Like Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunders are considered as the successors of New South Wales Blue.
The first debut of the team was made during the 2011-12 season of the Big Bash League, which is also considered as the inaugural season of BBL. The competition was very tough in the first years of the league, so the team was unable to perform well during those seasons of BBL.

During the year 2011 to 2014, ANZ Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park was declared as the home-ground of Sydney Thunders. During 2014-15 the home matches of Thunders were played in Sydney Showground Stadium because ANZ Stadium was being prepared for the AFC Asian Cup. Later, the announcement was made by the Thunders that they are leaving the ANZ Stadium and would play all their matches at Sydney Showground Stadium.
In the 2015-16 season, the Sydney Thunders played so well they were soon in the list of top teams of the season. Soon, there was a good fan following of the team and there were the chances of their victory. The Thunders became the favorite team of the BBL. Sydney Thunders was declared as the most-watched team of Australia during 2015-16 having a 1.2m TV audience. The Thunders stand up as the Champions of the 2015-16 season.

Callum Ferguson (Captain)


Age: 35 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Batter
Callum Ferguson is a right-handed batsman. He joined Sydney Thunders during BBL-07. He had also played for Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers in the past. He became the captain of Sydney Thunders in BBL-09. He performed very well during BBL-08 by scoring 442 runs in 14 matches which also includes a ground-breaking score of 113 not out on 52 balls. He has played in one test match, three T20 tournaments, and 30 one-day Internationals for Australia.

Sam Billings

Age: 29 years old
Country: England
Playing role: Batter
Sam Billings is a wicketkeeper and a right-handed batsman. During BBL-06 and BBL-07 Billings played with the Sixers. Then he joined the Thunder Nation!
He has scored more than 3000 runs in almost 176 T20 matches having a strike rate of 130. Moreover, he is one of the most popular T20 batsmen in the world.

Jonathan Cook

Age: 30 years
Playing role: Bowler
He is also a right-handed batsman. He joined the squad in BBL-08 as a Local Replacement Player. He is a right-arm leg-spinner. During the last season, he caught 13 wickets. He has played a total of 21 matches. He gained the best bowling record of 4-21 in a match against Hurricanes.

Ben Cutting


Age: 33 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Bowler
Benn Cutting is an all-rounder. He has a right-handed batting style and a right-arm fast-medium bowling style. He is a highly-experienced player. He has played in Canadian, Indian, Pakistani, Afghanistan T20 tournaments. He played for Australia in 4 one-day and 7 T20 International tournaments.
He has signed the contract for two seasons with the Thunders ahead BBL-10.


Oliver Davies

Age: 19 years
Country: Australia
A right-handed batsman. Bowling style is right-arm off-break. He is the young as well as the powerful player who joined the Thunders for BBL-09 but couldn’t play much due to a wrist injury.
He displayed a remarkable performance during Under 19 National Championships 2018-19.


Brendan Doggett

Age: 26 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Bowler
Brendan is also a right-handed batsman and has a bowling style of a right-arm medium-fast bowler. His potential came in front of the audience in 2018 when he was selected for the UAE tour against Pakistan.


Matthew Gilkes

Age: 21 years
Playing role: Wicketkeeper
A left-handed batsman who has signed for BBL-10 as well as the next two seasons with the Sydney Thunders till BBl-12. He also joined the club as a local replacement player before BBL-09. He is the young, energetic, and highly professional player who makes the Thunder’s Squad more powerful.

Chris Green


Age: 26 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Bowler
He is also an all-rounder. However, batting style is right-handed and bowling style is right-arm off-break. After playing for Sydney Thunders in BBL-09, Chris Green made the longest deal to play till BBL-13. He played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League 2020. He has also played for Canada, Pakistan, and Caribbean leagues.

Alex Hales

Age: 31 years
Country: England
Playing role: Batter
Alex Hales is an opening batsman. His bowling style is right-arm medium and is a right-handed batsman. He has an incredible T20 cricket career during which he has scored more than 7000 T20 runs including IPL.

Baxter J Holt

Age: 20 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Wicketkeeper
He is also a right-handed batter. He made his debut as a local replacement player in BBL-08. He rejoined the Sydney Thunders after 12 months of his healing from a severe back injury. He is one of the stronger players on the squad.

Usman Khawaja

Age: 33 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Batter
Usman Khawaja is a top-order batsman, having a left-handed batting style and right-arm medium bowling style. He has played for Australia almost 93 times including one-day, test matches, and T20 matches in which he scores 4,682 runs. During BBL-05 he scored 345 runs in only four matches.

Nathan McAndrew

Age: 27 years
Playing role: Bowler
He is a right-handed batsman. Right-arm medium-fast bowling style. He will join the thunders in BBL-10. As a result of his hard work, he received his NSW Blues contract in June 2020.

Adam Milne

Age: 28 years
Country: New Zealand
Playing role: Bowler
He plays as a bowler. However, he is also a right-handed batsman. He is a right-arm fast bowler. He signed with Thunders in BBL-10. He has played 21 T20 international tournaments and 40 one-day Internationals for New Zealand. The average run rate of Milne is 22.32 runs per wicket in the T20 tournament and 21.64 at the T20 International level.

Arjun Nair (Wicketkeeper)

Age: 22 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: All-rounder
Arjun Nair is a middle-order batsman. Right-handed batting; right-arm off-break bowling. He played really well for the Sydney Thunders in the BBL-09 finals, and he took 9 wickets and scored 100 runs. Recently, in 2020, he has rejoined the NSW Blues squad.

Alex Ross

Age: 28 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Batter
He is also a middle-order batsman. His bowling style is right-arm off-break. Ross is considered a popular and important player of Sydney Thunders. He scored 372 runs at the strike rate of 130. The date of Alex’s Big Bash Debut is 18-12-2014.

Daniel Sams

Age: 28 years
Playing role: Bowler
He is an all-rounder. He is a right-handed batsman and a left-arm fast-medium bowler. He set a new record by taking 30 wickets in BBL-09. Due to his is remarkable performances during BBL-09, he got the Michael Hussey Medal as Player of the Tournament. He also played for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

Jason Sangha

Age: 21 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Batter
Jason Sangha is a right-handed batsman. He got fame by scoring 133 runs not out while playing against England in 2017. At that time, he was about 17 years old. He joined the Thunders squad by signing a three-year contract.

Tanveer Sangha

Age: 18 years old
Country: Australia
Playing role: Bowler
Tanveer Sangha is a right-handed batsman with a leg-break bowling style. He was selected for the Under 19 World Cup at the age of 17. He took 15 wickets in the Under 19 World Cup tournament. In June 2020, he signed his first contract with NSW Blues.

Chris Tremain

Age: 29 years
Country: Australia
Playing role: Bowler
Chris Tremain is a right-arm medium-fast bowler and a right-handed batsman. He has played for Australia in almost four one-day International tournaments. During BBL-09 he was welcomed by the Sydney Thunders by signing a three-year contract. He joined the Big Bash League while playing for the Thunders in BBL-02.
